Dear Parents and Staff,
I am writing to update you on the tragic death of 8th grade student Kaila Jennings and to share a few preliminary pieces of information from her family. I am also writing to thank you for the tremendous outpouring of love and support many of our families have offered. It truly reflects the sense of family we strive to create at Imagine South Lake.
Kaila’s family let us know they welcome attendance from our Imagine South Lake family in her Celebration of Life, which will be held at 2pm on October 28th at Waterfront Park.
In the meantime, a Go Fund Me account has been set up by friends of the family to help Kaila’s family with funeral expenses. You can access that account here: https://www.gofundme.com/funeral-of-kiala-jennings.
Parents, we are aware of several rumors circulating on social media that Kaila’s death was caused by bullying. We conducted our own internal investigation and found nothing that would substantiate this rumor. We believe the police report will also confirm that bullying was not a factor.
Please be sure you speak with your child about the importance of verifying information before sharing it either verbally or on social media. Especially during a difficult time such as this, it is important that we are factual in what we share. It is equally important that we are thoughtful and considerate in what we share, knowing those who knew and loved Kaila will be hurt by hearing false information.
Thank you for the continuing support so many of you are offering to Kaila’s family and to our school community. We are thankful for our Imagine South Lake family and proud of the way we have come together during this time of grief.
As always, please reach to me personally with any questions or concerns.
